1.What kind of service?

This sets the cover wording and a starting order of service. You can change everything.

Service type

2.About them

Your photo stays on this device. It's never uploaded.

3.The service

Need to tell people? Hejmo can turn these details into one link people can reply to, so you know how many are coming to the reception.

4.Order of service

Add who's reading, singing, or speaking. Leave it blank if it's not decided yet.

5.Obituary

In your own words. A few short paragraphs is plenty, and nobody expects polish.

Leave a blank line between paragraphs.

6.The back page

Everything here is optional. Leave out what you don't need.

Separate names with commas.
A livestream, an online memorial, or a page where people can share memories.

7.Style and paper

Style

Free, no account, no watermark. Print both sides with flip on short edge, then fold.

In loving memory

Their name

How do you make a funeral program?

Start with the cover: their photo, their name, their dates, and the service time and place. Inside, list the order of service on the left and print their obituary or life story on the right. Use the back for a reading, the pallbearers, a thank-you from the family, and where to gather afterward. Print it on one sheet of paper, both sides, and fold it in half. The free template at the top of this page arranges all of it for you and makes a PDF ready to print at home or at a print shop.

What goes in a funeral program

Most programs follow the same four pages. Here's what goes where.

Front

  • "In loving memory" or the kind of service
  • Their photo and full name
  • Their dates of birth and death
  • The service date, time, and place

Inside left

  • The order of service, line by line
  • Who is reading, singing, or speaking
  • The officiant

Inside right

  • The obituary or life story
  • Two to four short paragraphs
  • The people they leave behind

Back

  • A reading, poem, or scripture
  • Pallbearers
  • A thank-you from the family
  • The reception or repast, and in lieu of flowers

How to print it

Print a day or two before the service, and check one copy before printing the rest.

At home
Print on both sides with "flip on short edge," then fold in half. Heavier paper (32 lb or 120 gsm) feels like a program, not a handout.
At a print shop
Bring the "to print" PDF and ask for letter size, double-sided, folded, and scored, on 80 lb text or card stock. Most shops can do it the same day.
How many
Expected guests plus about 20 percent. Families often keep a few extra as keepsakes.
Sharing on screen
The "to share" PDF has the four pages in reading order, for email, a group chat, or a livestream.

Who it's for

Best for

  • Funerals, memorial services, and celebrations of life
  • Homegoing services and funeral Masses
  • Families who need a program printed in a day or two
  • Anyone who'd rather not learn a design tool this week

Not the best fit for

  • Eight-page or tri-fold booklets (coming later)
  • Printing and shipping programs for you
  • Publishing an obituary in a newspaper

Questions

Common questions about funeral programs.

Is this funeral program template really free?

Yes. You can make the program and download both PDFs (one to print, one to share on screen) without an account, a payment, or a watermark.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The program is built in your browser, and the photo stays on your device. Your draft is saved on this device too, so you can close the page and come back to it.

What size is the program?

A sheet of US Letter paper (8.5 × 11 in) folded in half, which makes four 5.5 × 8.5 in pages. If you're in the UK, Ireland, or Australia, choose A4 for an order of service that folds to A5.

How do I print it so the pages line up?

Print the "to print" PDF on both sides and choose "flip on short edge" in the print settings, then fold the sheet in half. Print one copy first to check it. A print shop will do it if you ask for "letter, double-sided, folded, scored."

How many programs should I print?

Take the number of people you expect and add about 20 percent. If you're collecting replies, use your headcount. Extra copies are often kept as keepsakes.

Can I use it for a homegoing, a funeral Mass, or a celebration of life?

Yes. Pick the kind of service first. It sets the cover wording and a starting order of service: homegoing programs list the family processional and reflections, and a funeral Mass follows the Mass of Christian Burial. Edit any line to match your church.

Can it help me write the obituary?

It helps you write it, rather than writing it for you. If you get stuck, it can ask a few gentle questions about what's missing, suggest a first line, or tidy your wording. Every suggestion waits for you to accept it, and it never adds a name, place, or date you didn't write.

Do you have a Word or Google Docs funeral program template?

This makes a finished PDF instead, so nothing shifts when you print. If you need to change something later, open this page on the same device, edit, and download again.

Let people know when and where

Hejmo makes a free page for the service: one link with the date, place, and directions. People can tell you they're coming and leave a note for the family.
