Celebration of Life Invitation Wording: Examples You Can Send Today

Good celebration of life invitation wording says who, when, where, and what to expect, then asks for a reply in a way that feels like help, not homework.

By Hejmo7 min read

Two memorial invitations made with Hejmo: “Celebration of Life for Eleanor Whitcombe, 1941 – 2026” framed by painted white lilies, and “Memorial Service for Walter Brightwater, 1950 – 2026” under a painted olive branch, each with the date, time, and place.
A memorial invitation should tell people what to expect and make replying easy.

Short answer

Details
The person's name, with the date, time, and address.
What to expect
A few words on what the gathering will be like.
RSVP
A gentle ask to reply by a date.
Example
"Join us to celebrate Maria Alvarez's life Saturday, October 10, 2:00 PM, Riverside Park Pavilion. Please reply by October 3."

Short wording you can copy

Once you have the date and the place, a handful of sentences will do. Nobody is grading the prose.

Guests want to know whether they're welcome, what to wear, and how to tell you they're coming.

Simple

Please join us for a celebration of life for Maria Alvarez on Saturday, October 10 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Park Pavilion, 400 River Road. Please reply by October 3.

Warm

Maria loved a full table. Join us to remember her on Saturday, October 10 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Park Pavilion. Wear something bright, bring a story, and let us know by October 3 if you can come.

Formal

The family of Maria Alvarez invites you to a memorial service on Saturday, October 10 at 2:00 PM at St. Anne's Church, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Kindly reply by October 3.

Text message

Hi, this is Ana, Maria's daughter. We're celebrating Mom's life on Sat Oct 10 at 2pm, Riverside Park Pavilion. Everyone's welcome. Details and RSVP here: [link]. We'd love to see you.

Copy-paste reply block

Under the details, a few lines cover the reply: "Please use the link to let us know by October 3 whether you can come and how many will be with you. If you'd like, leave a memory of Maria. We'll be reading them together."

What to include in a celebration of life invitation

People hesitate to reply when a detail is missing. Answer the questions they'd otherwise call to ask, so you aren't fielding calls on top of everything else.

  • Their full name, and the name people knew them by.
  • Dates of birth and death, if you want them there.
  • Date, start time, and a rough end time.
  • Full address, plus parking or entrance notes.
  • What kind of gathering it is: a service, a reception, a meal, an open house.
  • Dress, especially if you're asking for color or casual clothes.
  • Whether children are welcome.
  • How to reply, and by when.
  • Where to send flowers, cards, or donations.
  • A contact for questions, or the link that answers them.

Funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life?

The word you choose sets expectations, so use the one that fits.

  • Funeral: held with the person present, often within days, and more often announced than invited.
  • Memorial service: held afterward, anywhere from days to months later, and tends to keep a formal structure.
  • Celebration of life: can also come days, weeks, or months later, and tends to be casual and personal, held somewhere that mattered to them.

Memorial service

A memorial service for David Chen will be held on Sunday, November 1 at 11:00 AM at Lakeside Community Center. A light lunch follows.

Celebration of life

Come celebrate David's life the way he'd have wanted: outdoors, with good food and better stories. Sunday, November 1 at 11:00 AM on the Lakeside Community Center lawn.

Funeral with reception

Funeral services for David Chen: Friday, October 23 at 10:00 AM, Grace Lutheran Church. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the family home afterward.

Say it in the first line

If you're calling it a celebration of life, say so up front. Guests read it as permission to bring stories, and often to skip the black.

How to ask for RSVPs without making it feel like a party

It's fine to ask. Tie the request to a real need and it reads as practical rather than formal.

The venue wants a number, the caterer charges per plate, and someone is printing programs.

Tied to food

Please reply by October 3 so we can plan the meal.

Tied to seating

The chapel seats 80. Please let us know by October 3 if you'll join us.

Open door

Please reply if you can so we know how many to expect. If you decide at the last minute, come anyway.

Reception only

The service is open to all. If you'll stay for the reception, please reply by October 3.

A gentler deadline

Some guests won't answer the first time they see the invitation. Sending it about two weeks ahead, with a reply date a week before the gathering, leaves room for one quiet reminder.

Inviting memories with each reply

The reply is a chance to collect something you'll keep. Add one line that invites a memory, and give people a place to put it, such as the note field on an online invitation.

In Hejmo, set your RSVP question to "Share a memory of Maria if you'd like." The stories arrive next to the names of the people who wrote them.

With the reply

If you'd like, share a memory of Maria when you reply. We'll be reading them together at the gathering.

Bring something

Bring a story, a photo, or a recipe she gave you. There'll be a table for them.

For those who can't come

Can't be there? Leave a note anyway. The family will read every one.

Wording for text, email, and Facebook

The same gathering usually gets announced three ways. Keep the facts identical and change the length.

In lieu of flowers

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations go to the Riverside Food Bank, where Maria volunteered for 20 years.

Why one link beats a dozen replies

One link gives every guest the same details and one place to answer. Without it, even careful wording comes apart as replies arrive as texts, calls, Facebook comments, and "let me know if you need anything."

Every Hejmo event has a shared link you can post anywhere. Add a private link for each household when you want to know exactly who answered.

  • Guests reply in two taps without an account.
  • Each reply can carry a memory.
  • A sibling or friend can co-host, so the questions don't all land on you.

Questions

What do you write on a celebration of life invitation?

Their name, the date and time, the full address, what kind of gathering to expect, and how to reply by a set date. Add dress guidance, whether children are welcome, and where to send flowers or donations if that applies.

Is it okay to ask for an RSVP to a memorial or celebration of life?

Yes, when you have food, seating, or programs to plan. Tie the request to the reason ("so we can plan the meal") and add a line that people are welcome even if they decide late.

How far in advance should you send a celebration of life invitation?

Two to four weeks when you can. Celebrations of life and memorial services can be held days, weeks, or months after a death, which often leaves room for that. A funeral held within days is announced as soon as the details are set.

What's the difference between a memorial service invitation and a celebration of life invitation?

A memorial service invitation reads more formally and usually names a place of worship or funeral home. A celebration of life invitation is warmer and more personal, often names a casual venue, and tells guests they can bring stories and skip the black.

How do you word "in lieu of flowers"?

Name the cause and, if you like, why: "In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Riverside Food Bank, where Maria volunteered." If flowers are welcome, say where to send them instead.

Should the invitation include the dates of birth and death?

It's optional. Formal invitations often place them under the name, and many families like seeing the full span of a life. Leave them off if the invitation feels heavier with them.

Can you send a celebration of life invitation by text?

Yes. Keep it to a few lines: who you are, whose life you're celebrating, the date, time, and place, and a link with the full details and a way to reply.

Let people tell you they're coming

Share one link. Guests reply in two taps and can leave a memory. Your count fills in while you look after everything else.
