How to RSVP: What It Means and Replies to Copy

RSVP means “please reply.” Here's how to answer an invitation by text, email, link, or reply card, with wording you can copy for yes, no, and everything in between.

A good RSVP answers three things: are you coming, who's coming, and anything the host asked.

Short answer

RSVP stands for the French “répondez s'il vous plaît,” which means “please reply.” To RSVP, answer the host by the date on the invitation, using the method it asks for (a link, text, email, or reply card). Say whether you're coming, name everyone who's coming with you, and answer any question the host asked, such as allergies or a meal choice.

What does RSVP mean?

RSVP is short for “répondez s'il vous plaît,” French for “please reply.” When an invitation says RSVP, the host is asking you to tell them whether you're coming, usually by a set date.

An RSVP invitation is any invitation that asks for that reply. The host needs a headcount for food, seats, or space, so a reply matters even when the answer is no.

  • “RSVP by May 3”: reply by that date, yes or no.
  • “Regrets only”: reply only if you can't come; silence means yes.
  • “RSVP to Maria”: reply to that person, not the whole group.
  • “Please RSVP”: technically repeats “please,” but it means the same thing.

How to RSVP, step by step

Whatever the format, the same few steps make a reply a host can actually use.

  1. Reply the way the invitation asks: tap the link, return the card, or text the number given.
  2. Answer by the RSVP date. Earlier is kinder; the host may be waiting on a final count.
  3. Say yes or no clearly. A maybe is fine if you say when you'll know.
  4. Name everyone who's coming. “We'll be there” leaves the host guessing whether that's two people or five.
  5. Answer anything the host asked, such as allergies, a meal choice, or whether a parent is staying.
  6. Don't add guests who weren't invited. If the invitation doesn't mention a plus-one or kids, ask first.
  7. If your plans change, update your answer as soon as you know.

How to RSVP by text

Most invitations to casual events arrive by text or group chat, and a short, specific text reply is perfectly polite. Reply to the host directly rather than the whole group, unless the host asked everyone to answer in the thread.

Yes

We'd love to come! It'll be the two of us. See you Saturday at 6.

Yes, with kids

Yes, count us in: me, Dan, and both kids (Leo is 4 and Ava is 7). No allergies.

No

Thank you so much for the invite! We're away that weekend, so we can't make it. Have a wonderful time.

Maybe

Thanks for inviting us! I'm waiting on my work schedule and will let you know for sure by Wednesday.

How to RSVP by email

Email replies can be a little more formal, especially for work events or a host you don't know well. Put your answer in the subject line so it's easy to count.

Subject line

RSVP: Yes, 2 attending – Linda's retirement party

Yes

Hi Karen, thank you for the invitation. Mark and I will be glad to attend Linda's retirement party on June 25. Neither of us has dietary restrictions. Best, Priya

No

Hi Karen, thank you for including me. Unfortunately I have a prior commitment that evening and won't be able to attend. Please pass on my congratulations to Linda. Best, Priya

How to RSVP to a party

For a birthday or a backyard party, the host mostly needs a count and any detail that changes the plan. For a kids' party, add whether a parent will stay and any allergies. The birthday RSVP guide covers what hosts usually ask.

Kids' birthday, yes

Maya would love to come to Theo's party! I'll stay with her. She's allergic to peanuts, so we'll bring her own treat.

Kids' birthday, drop-off

Yes for Leo! I'll drop him off at 2 and pick up at 4. No allergies.

Adult party, plus-one

I'll be there! Is it OK if I bring my partner, Sam? Totally fine if not.

Late reply

So sorry for the slow reply! If there's still room, we'd love to come, the two of us.

How to fill out a formal RSVP card

Weddings and formal events often include a printed reply card with a line for your names and two choices. Write the names of everyone attending, tick or write your answer, choose a meal if asked, and mail it back before the date printed on the card.

Accepting

Mr. and Mrs. James Lee accept with pleasure.

Declining

Ana Torres declines with regret.

Card with a number line

M: Ana Torres and Luis Ortega. 2 will attend.

Only the names on the envelope

A formal invitation is addressed to the people who are invited. If your partner or kids aren't named and there's no “and guest,” assume they aren't included, or ask the host before you reply.

Declining politely, and changing your answer

You don't owe a detailed reason for saying no. A thank-you, a clear no, and a kind word for the occasion are enough.

If you said yes and can't make it, tell the host as soon as you know, especially for a seated dinner or a catered event. If you said no and your plans free up, ask before turning up; the count may already be final. On an online invitation, update your answer on the same link so the host's count changes too.

Questions

Do I need to RSVP if I'm not going?

Yes, unless the invitation says “regrets only.” A no helps the host plan as much as a yes does.

What does “regrets only” mean?

Reply only if you can't come. If you say nothing, the host counts you as attending.

How late can I RSVP?

By the date on the invitation. If it's passed, reply anyway with an apology and ask whether there's still room.

Can I bring a plus-one or my kids?

Only if the invitation says so. If it doesn't mention them, ask the host privately before you reply.

Is it rude to RSVP by text?

No, if the invitation came by text or the host gave a number. Match the way you were invited, and for a formal printed invitation, reply the way it asks.
